Product Description IRIX 5.3 (Sherwood) is an upwardly compatible version of IRIX 5.2 which incorporates bug fixes and performance enhancements. IRIX 5.3 is supported on all platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy R4600, Indigo2 R4600SC, Corona, and OnyxLE (R8000 based systems are not supported by any IRIX 5.* release). The purpose of this release is to provide new features and enhanced performance relative to previous versions of IRIX 5. Major changes to IRIX 5.3: o Parallelized TCP/IP. See eoe release notes section 3.1 (eoe1.man.relnotes) o Improved virtual memory performance. See eoe release notes section 3.1. o Improved NFS performance. NFS2 compatibility includes the equivalent of the aggressive read-ahead patch. o NFS 3.0 is now part of the optional NFS product (NFS2 still used as default). (nfs3.sw.nfs3 is sub-system for NFS 3.0). o Caching file system is available. See onc3_eoe release notes (onc3_eoe.man.relnotes). Cachefs works with NFS2 only. o Enhanced IO4 serial driver performance. See eoe release notes section 3.1. o Sendmail 8.6.9 is used. See eoe release notes section 3.2.1. o a number of IRIX 5.2 bugs fixed o Remote printing to BSD printers is now supported. BSD printers can be installed using GUI tools. lpsched also accepts print jobs from remote lpd(1M) daemons. See the print release notes (print.man.relnotes). o New inst includes a GUI (swmgr is command for GUI based inst), improved space checking, live inst supported for layered products and patches, better conflict resolution mechanism. See eoe release notes section 2.1 o GUI available for managing swap space (cswap). See Sysadmdesktop release notes (sysadmdesktop.man.relnotes). o Improved desktop performance. o Mediamail updated. See Sysadmdesktop release notes. o New C++ (native) compiler. cfront translator is still provided. See the c++_dev release notes (c++_dev.man.relnotes). o New version of dbx using the same back end as CaseVision (old dbx as odbx) See the compiler_dev release notes. Section 3. o rdist 6.1 supported. See eoe release notes section 5. o OpenGL support for VGX graphics (VGXT and Skywriter) and Personal IRIS workstations (8-bit, G, and TG graphics options). The only supported graphics that don't support OpenGL is GTX. Some OpenGL operations are significantly slower on GR1 and VGX graphics than the IrisGL equivalents. See the gl_dev release notes. o OpenGL extensions added for all platforms that support OpenGL. See the gl_dev release notes. o X11R6 libraries and clients (X server is X11R5 based, with some 6 features) See piranha.asd:/usr/tmp/WhatsNewWithR6.ps for more XllR6 implementation details. Also, see x_eoe release notes. o 16MB Indy performance improved o Improved objectserver (has new object managers). NIS users now supported. See the Cadmin release notes. (cadmin.man.relnotes). o New launch effect on desktop o pixstats is now added to prof. See compiler_dev release notes. Section 3. The eoe release notes list additional major changes. 2. Dependencies/Compatibility Information o Hardware compatibility: IRIX 5.3 is supported on all platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy R4600, Indigo2 R4600SC, Corona, and OnyxLE (R8000 based systems are not supported by any IRIX 5.* release). o IRIX 5.2 Software Compatibility: IRIX 5.2 binaries can run under 5.3. The exception are device drivers. Device drivers MUST be recompiled for IRIX 5.3. See the IRIX release notes section "1.3 Software_Compatibility" for details (eoe1.man.relnotes). o IRIX 4.0.5 compatibility: Same as 5.2 for running existing 4.0.5 binaries. See the IRIX release notes section "1.3 Software_Compatibility" for details. o Supported/Unsupported Software Matrix MR dates are as of 11/17/94. It is possible that any date after 11/17/94 may not be met (that is, a product scheduled to MR on a date after 11/17/94 may or may not have). MR dates marked N/A were not available. Training plan There are no plans for any training classes for the field (that is, there are no 'traveling' training sessions planned). Education Design Technologies (EDT) will incorporate 5.3 changes into all existing course materials. Expected completion date is Jan 15, 1995. EDT is also preparing 5.3 transition course materials for use by local training organizations. Expected completion date is Jan 15, 1995. The December CSD monthly vide will have some 5.3 introductory material. 5. Documentation Following is a list of reference material for IRIX 5.3: o X11 R6 implementation notes for IRIX 5.3 and IRIX 6.0 (PostScript): piranha.asd:/usr/tmp/WhatsNewWithR6.ps o Release Notes: manserv.csd and the CSD server are still loaded with Beta2 copies of man pages and release notes as of 11/22/94. They should be updated by 11/28/94. It is recommended that these release notes be read, as a minimum: IRIX, eoe, nfs, onc3_eoe, c_dev, c_eoe, compiler_dev, compiler_eoe On-line release notes are loaded on the system manserv.csd.sgi.com in the directory /manserv/relnotes/5.3. To view: rlogin manserv.csd -l guest setenv RELNOTESPATH /manserv/relnotes/5.3 relnotes (Note: grelnotes command is not available on manserv.csd) If you have automount running you can use grelnotes: cd hosts/manserv.csd/manserv/relnotes/5.3 setenv RELNOTESPATH /tmp_mnt/hosts/manserv.csd/manserv/relnotes/5.3 grelnotes 5.3 release notes can also be seen using an xmosaic viewer. The URL to use is: http://www.csd/html_home/relnotes/5.3/home.html Copies of the release notes will also be put on Silicon Surf (the SGI web server). Silicon Surf is accessible via the internet by customers. URL is: www.sgi.com. Currently, 5.2 and 6.0 release notes are on Silicon Surf (possible source to refer customers to who want a 'sneak preview' of 5.3). As of Nov 22, this had not yet been done (expected to be done week of 11/28). o Man Pages: On-line man pages are loaded on the system manserv.csd.sgi.com in the directory /manserv/catman.5.3 To view: rlogin manserv.csd -l guest man -M/manserv/catman.5.3 o InSight Books: InSight books are available on the 5.3 CD on a mountable file system. This means customers can view the manuals without having to first install them (assuming they have InSight on the system that they mount the CD with). This is the first IRIX release that has done this. To view the books mount the CD and type: iiv -l /CDROM/insight/SGI_bookshelves (this assumes the CD is mounted to /CDROM). If you are on the internal WAN and have automount configured you can type: iiv -l /hosts/dist.wpd/all_parts/812-0119-006/insight The following InSight books are available on the IRIX 5.3 CD: SGI End User: IRIS Essentials Personal System Administration Guide" IRIS Utilities Guide Documentation Catalog for IRIX 5.3 IRIS Explorer Users Guide ImageVision Tools User's Guide IRIS Glossary of Terms ISDN User's Guide Showcase User's Guide Media Control Panels User's Guide Media Tools User's Guide SGI Admin: Challenge S Server Owner's Guide Diskless Workstation Administration Guide Multi_Channel Option Programmer's Guide Deskside POWER CHALLENGE and CHALLENGE L Owner's Guide POWER CHALLENGE and CHALLENGE XL Rackmount Owner's Guide POWER Onyx and Onyx Deskside Owner's Guide POWER Onyx and Onyx Rackmount Owner's Guide RAID System Administration Guide Software Installation Administrator's Guide IRIX Advanced Site and Server Administration Guide" CHALLENGE Vault L Owner's Guide CHALLENGE Vault Rack and SCSIBox 2 Owner's Guide Network License System Administration Guide Tooltalk Setup and Administration Guide SGI Developer IRIS Explorer Module Writer's Guide IMPORTANT: Please do not use manserv.csd as your primary server for man pages, release notes, and InSight docs. You should add 5.3 man pages, release notes and InSight docs to your local systems/servers. manserv.csd is not intended to be used as a corporate wide server. Thanks. 6. Technical support delivery issues (Complexity of support expected) o Inst and Updating: Installing 5.3 is expected to be the initial area where users will require the largest support: + Inst has been updated and changed for 5.3. See the EOE release notes (chapter 2) for information about inst and known bugs and limitations . TACs should prepare by making sure they have support personnel familiar with the new inst, the known bugs and the issues that follow. + An online version of the Software Installation Administrator's Guide is now provided with IRIX (this used to only be provided in hardcopy form). All support personnel should be familiar with this manual (using InSight, customers can read the manual from the CD without installing the 5.3 books -- see previous section 'Documentation'). + The inst(1M) and swmgr(1M) man pages should be reviewed. swmgr is a GUI version of inst. Also, many people forget inst has online help which is always useful. + One inst bug not mentioned in the release notes is that 'inst -af' is broken. The bug is that inst -a does not mark anything for install and ends up spending a lot of time reading the inst history and the distribution, then exits with: ERROR: Software Manager: automatic installation failed: Nothing selected for installation. This only happens when the product being requested is a new product, automatic installations of upgrades should work fine. To workaround, use: inst -u upgrade_and_new -af distribution or inst -u upgrade_or_new -af distribution + inst now detects software conflicts and presents the user with some choices to resolve the conflicts. Example: Inst> keep * Inst> install 4DDN.sw.4DDN Inst> go ERROR : Conflicts must be resolved. 4DDN.sw.4DDN cannot be installed because of missing prerequisites: 1a. Do not install 4DDN.sw.4DDN (1021572033) 1b. Also install eoe1.sw.dlpi (0 - 2147483647) and eoe1.sw.svr4net (0 - 2147483647) Resolve conflicts by typing "conflicts choice choice ..." Or try help conflicts Inst> conflicts 1a No conflicts Inst> go If the user typed 'conflicts 1b' inst would have marked eoe1.sw.dlpi and eoe1.sw.svr4net for installation and the installation would have run when 'go' was typed. + Some problems have cropped up resolving conflicts with patches. You may see a message similar to this from inst: Patch patchSG0000088.WorkShop_sw.cvspeed does not have base subsystem WorkShop.sw.cvspeed version 1008100735 to 1011178010 installed 1a. Do not install patchSG0000088.WorkShop_sw.cvspeed (1008100815) and will find that the conflict can not be resolved. This happens if inst 'thinks' the patch does not have the base subsystem installed which the patch requires. To workaround, remove the patch to resolve the conflict: Inst> remove nameofthepatch From swmgr the patch can be removed by clicking on the remove box next to the patch in question. This problem should only be seen by 5.3 beta sites upgrading to the 5.3 MR version. + There is an error in how rqs(1) calculates how much time is needed until completion. As a result, rqs will 'stall' at 99% or 100% for a period of time (up to a few minutes). (note: rqs(1) runs as part of the inst process.) This may confuse some users into thinking the system has hung since they were seeing 10%, 20%, 30% etc. every few seconds up until it reaches 99% (at which time 99% is displayed for a few minutes and then things continue). (Users do get some feedback since the disk is accessing during this time -- but in some cases the user can't hear the disk or see any indicators of disk activity). + IRIX 5.3 inst supports 'live inst' once you are at 5.3. With live inst you can install software (that previously only installed with miniroot) on a running 'live' system. After the live inst you may have to reboot (many optional products will not require rebooting; only those that have kernel modules, or startup daemons at boot time). Some additional post inst processing is done during system shutdown following a live inst (rqs is run, etc.). If the user has an Indy and they reboot using the on/off button (this initiates a controlled shutdown) a problem can result if the post inst processing done during the shutdown takes more then two minutes to complete. The cause of this is a 2 minute timer that gets invoked when an Indy shuts down with the on/off switch. If after two minutes the system has not shut down the power is turned off. This could interrupt an rqs(1) that was in process leaving any file it was processing in a corrupted state. The result will probably be a system in an unusable state requiring a re-install via miniroot. Everybody upgrading to IRIX 5.3 will do so from miniroot. The problem described above would not be seen following a miniroot installation (live install upgrade to 5.3 is not supported -- have to be at 5.3 to use live installs). IRIX 5.3 beta sites could possibly run into this since they could do a live install to 5.3 MR. The problem could be seen in the future if there is ever a patch or a post 5.3 release that does cause a long rqs run at shutdown. The workaround is to reboot using the the reboot(1M) command, init 6, etc. after a live inst and avoid using the Indy on/off button to reboot. + inst does not support remote tapes. Workaround is to copy software from tape to a disk and inst from the disk. o Symbolic links: In IRIX 5.2 if you overwrite an existing file with a link you get this error message: UX:ln: ERROR: Cannot create filename: File exists Under 5.3, the file is overwritten by the link and is deleted (you are left with a dangling link). Note that the 5.3 ln man page erroneously states: "If target is an existing file, its contents are destroyed, except in the ln -s case where the command will fail (use the -i or -f option to override this behavior)." o OpenInventor/Inventor: Library missing issue, compiler warning issues and an install issue are documented in: /usr/Knowledge/Products/gfx/OpenInventor/articles/inventor_5.3.issues o Device drivers: Device drivers must be re-compiled. Third party device drivers would be expected to be the ones causing support issues (particularly if the vendor does not yet have a 5.3 version available). o 6.0 Cross Compilers: The 6.0 IDO CD includes a 64 bit cross compiler environment to allow 6.0 binaries to be developed on 5.2 systems. The 64 bit cross were tested on IRIX 5.3 and should work fine. One difference between 5.2 and 5.3 is that the documents asks the user to use the patch34 inst -- 5.3 inst is 'patch aware' and will work as is. o GR 1.1 is not supported with OpenGL (applies to PIs): PI users that want to use OpenGL will need a HUR-RE2 ("Refurbished Raster Engine Upgrade") to update to a GR 1.2 (hinv will show "Graphics board: GR1.1"). Many PIs already have this update (the GR 1.2 gives an improvement in X windows performance and many systems were updated when PIs went from 3.* News to 4.0.* X). o Kernel Stack Overflows: A potential problem exists on all hardware platforms running 5.3 that may cause a kernel stack overflow. Patch 158 is available to work around this problem. This patch can be found on the 5.3 NFS CD (part number 812-0128-005). From the NFS release notes for the patch (note the recommendation to not load the patch unless you see the actual problem): 1.2 Bugs_fixed_by_patch_SG0000158 This patch contains fixes for the following problems which exist in IRIX 5.3 (bug numbers from SGI bug tracking system are included for reference): o Changes were put into the kernel which allow the kernel stack to be increased by an additional page for real- time processes and otherwise on an as-needed basis. This increases the reliability of the system by eliminating scenarios in which the kernel stack might overflow and panic the system (bug #240710). This patch is not needed unless a particular kernel stack overflow problem has been encountered. Running a layered file system over NFS is one scenerio in which this problem has been seen. You can view patch 158 release notes with these commands: rlogin guest@dist.wpd setenv RELNOTESPATH /all_parts/812-0128-005/relnotes relnotes patchSG0000158 1 o Electronic Services: Electronic Services 1.5 will not install properly on 5.3. The workaround is to type 'set rulesoverride' from the inst prompt and then continue the installation. o OpenGL Fortran Bindings: fgl.h is fortran OIpenGL bindings. These are broke in 5.3 MR and programs will not compile. A patch will be issued as the fix. o Desk Overviews: ov(1X) will not work after May 15, 1995 unless a new license is issued. This will be a support issue on that date. The user will see this message (you can reproduce this by commenting out the ov license in /var/netls/nodelock) when they run ov after May 15 (note that they may be running past May 15 and may not see this until they log off and restart ov at the next login): No Desk Overview licenses Due to a software patent dispute instituted by Xerox Corporation, the Desks and Desks Overview features of this version of the IRIX operating system are now optional and may or may not be available to you after May 15, 1995. On this date, these features will be disabled unless you have entered a license code obtained from Silicon Graphics. Consult Chapter 1 of the desktop_eor Release Notes for more information. Silicon Graphics apologizes for this inconvenience and appreciates your understanding. For updates, see comp.sys.sgi.admin, or call 1-415-390-4334. Please do not send email, or call other SGI numbers. There are still legal issues between SGI and Xerox at the time of MR. It is possible that SGI might choose to not license ov from Xerox and the feature would be permanently disabled for 5.3. o Who should consider not loading 5.3: + Anyone who plans to upgrade a Challenge/Onyx to a Power Challenge/Onyx (5.3 to 6.0.* upgrades have not been tested). + Anyone developing code that must run on 6.0.* (6.0.* precedes 5.3 and backwards compatibility for binaries can not be guaranteed). + Anyone who has a third party device driver and they do not yet have a 5.3 version of the device driver. 7. Marketing Information CSD marketing is running a 5.3 promotion to encourage users that are not covered by a support agreement to upgrade to 5.3. The primary promotion is a reduced price for IRIX 5.3 when the customer purchases a support contract. Other promotions will also be available (i.e. reduced price for IRIX 5.3 for those that absolutely do not want to buy a support contract). This is similar to a promotion run for 5.2. For more information contact: gtc@csd.sgi.com GREG COOK 3-1509 17U-133 CSD MARKETING 8. Upgrade Policy As of October 31st there were approximately 33000 systems under support that will receive 5.3 (installed base is a little over 114000). The software is being distributed to all sites with maintenance contracts (push). The IRIX 5.3 field distribution schedule is: Internal LIBRARY Shipments 11/22-11/23/94 ITC / Partner /OEM Shipments 11/28-12/2/94 Intl PO/CASH Shipments 12/19/94-1/13/95 Varsity/NAFO HiPri/Ovrpck Shipments 1/5-1/13/95 NAFO Snap #1 Shipments [U,N,A-Z] 1/13-2/24/95 Potential Snap #2 2/17/95 Snap #2 Shipments 2/24-3/17/95 SoftWare Distribution (SWD) contact for 5.3 distribution information: phyllisp@csd.sgi.com PHYLLIS PETRACCA 3-4079 17U-180 9. Known Bugs See section "Technical support delivery issues" above for a list of issues that are expected to cause the biggest problems. Know, Must Fix and Exception bugs are posted to the SGI internal news group sgi.engr.sherwood on a daily basis prior to MR. A snapshot of these was taken when 5.3 MR'ed (November 17, 1994) and can be found in these three files: csestuff.csd:/user/Knowledge/Products/irix/5.3/articles/5.3_bugs, 5.3_must, 5.3_exceptions The above 3 files contain bugs for products that may have not MR'ed as of Nov 17, 1994 (the file contains info for all products). Use PV for latest status of any bug you are concerned about. Note: Exceptioned bugs revert to a status of OPEN after MR. If you use PV to search for a bug a status of 'exception' may not be valid shortly after Nov 17, 1994. Also, see the various release notes for general lists of known bugs. Running PV: You can run PV (the bug filing system) and from the main PV menu enter 'sherwood' as the Project and 'Open' as the Status and select the search button. This will list all open bugs, etc. You may have to run PV from a system on the Mountain View campus. OasisIII also indexes the bug data base and can be used to search for known bugs. See this document for pointers on setting up pv or OasisIII: csestuff.csd:/user/Knowledge/CSE_Business/CSE-Info/info-roadmap
